Microsoft Loop Unveiled at Ignite 2021

Microsoft unveiled a new productivity tool at their annual conference. Here’s what you need to know.

Get ready for a new app that will bring forth Microsoft’s vision for the future of Office. Microsoft Loop aims to break down the rigid barriers between different types of file format, allowing content to be deconstructed into components that can easily be shared between applications.

As a result of the release, cross functionality within M365 apps will allow items like tables, charts, lists, and more to be seamlessly integrated and updated in real time by multiple users from any location.

Items like tables, charts, lists, and more to be seamlessly integrated and updated in real time by multiple users from any location.

Although Loop is new, the technology builds upon previously available tools, as Microsoft rebrands its Fluid work program. Previously known as Fluid Components, newly branded Loop “Components” are modular building blocks that allow users to integrate work from a variety of sources.

Components are one of Loop’s three primary elements. First, Loop “Pages,” (a new type of document) is where these components are organized. Second, the Page is a shared canvas, which gives multiple users the ability to store files and links in addition to components.

The last key element in Loop is the Loop “Workspace”. Workspaces provide a way to see Pages and Components related to a specific project. Microsoft’s describes them as, “Spaces that allow you and your team to see and group everything important to your project, making it easy for you to catch up on what everyone is working on and track progress toward shared goals.”

Microsoft is laying the groundwork for a post-Office world with an approach that will be complimentary to traditional document creation applications. Loop is all about collaboration and real-time editing that aims to adapt to the ways that many teams are working today.

Microsoft will be sharing more information about the availability of Loop in the coming months.
